Everyone Wants More Energy. Nobody Wants the Infrastructure.

We often assume expensive electricity or constrained energy comes down to technology. Better batteries. More solar. Smarter engineers.

But according to F. Ichiro Gifford, that's not the real bottleneck.

Much of the technology already exists. The demand is obvious. Often, the funding is too.

The harder problem is permission—getting projects approved, built, and accepted by the communities they serve.

Everyone Wants Cheap Power...

...until someone proposes the infrastructure that would actually deliver it.

People want:

  • Lower electric bills

  • Cleaner energy

  • Energy independence

  • More reliable infrastructure

But when projects become real, support often disappears.

Not because the goals changed.

Because construction started.

It's Never Just About Energy

Offshore wind becomes a debate about whales and ocean views.

Transmission lines become fights over forests and property values.

Nuclear becomes a conversation about fear and politics.

Infrastructure projects rarely stay about infrastructure for long.

The Real Bottleneck

The deeper argument isn't really about energy.

It's about our ability to build.

We've created a system where almost everyone can stop a project, but very few people are rewarded for helping one move forward.

Healthy scrutiny matters. But eventually, someone has to say yes.

What About Nuclear?

Small modular reactors are a good example.

Technically, they're increasingly viable.

The harder challenge isn't engineering.

It's permitting, licensing, and convincing communities to allow them to be built.

Technology is moving faster than our ability to approve it.

So What Can You Do?

If permission is the bottleneck, that's where people need to show up.

That means attending:

  • Town meetings

  • Permitting hearings

  • Public Utility Commission meetings

  • ISO New England meetings

Those rooms shape the future of energy, yet they're often filled almost entirely with insiders.

Building the Future

The conversation ends on a simple idea:

Technology alone won't create an abundant future.

Eventually, someone has to approve the project, defend it, and build it.

The question isn't whether America can invent the future.

It's whether we're still willing to build it.
